Jamie Carragher raves about one Liverpool star, makes big claim

Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football – as per Football Daily – that Diogo Jota should now be one of the first names on the Liverpool team sheet after his brace on Saturday – and he poses a bigger goal threat than Roberto Firmino.

Jota, 24, came off the bench on Saturday evening with the scoreline at 0-0 with half an hour still to play. Fast forward until the full-time whistle, Jota had scored twice and Liverpool had won 3-0 – with Salah netting his 26th of the season.

It comes after Jota had scored three goals in two Portugal appearances during the international break. His form has simply been out of this world, now netting 12 goals in 22 Liverpool games – nine of which have come from the bench.

He has only completed 90 minutes on four occasions for Liverpool, so his stats are simply sublime. Carragher is of that opinion and believes he should be picked week in, week out – replacing 29-year-old Firmino who has scored just six goals all season.

“Taking a look at Liverpool’s forwards and his impact, I’ve been on this show before saying Jota should come in for Firmino – he’s a bigger goal threat. That stat (12 in 22) shows it, and basically how much they have missed him,” Carragher said.

“Those stats show me that he has to be, almost one of the first names on the team sheet. For how dominant Liverpool were, they still don’t have enough goalscorers. With his goals for Portugal, he is a goal or an assist every 90 minutes.”

TBR’s view – Is Jota good enough to do Firmino’s role?

There is no doubt that Jota offers much more of a goal threat than Firmino, and that he is sharper in the box when it comes to his movement and his finishing. But can he link the play in the way Firmino does? Can he connect the midfield and attack?

Probably not as well as Firmino does it. But purely because of his amount of goals, his importance and impact in the Liverpool side simply outweighs that of Firmino. It would be a massive shock if £90,000-a-week (Spotrac) Jota does not start this week.
