Jamie Carragher questions Mo Salah’s recent comments, urges Liverpool man to stay put

Liverpool legend and now pundit, Jamie Carragher, has compared current Reds forward Mo Salah to former England man Michael Owen in his most comments.

Carragher, writing in The Telegraph, was critical of Salah’s recent interview with a Spanish newspaper in which he claimed he was unsure of his future and that the thought of playing for someone like Real Madrid may appeal. Salah was also apparently upset at not being named captain last weekend.

However, Salah continues to bang in the goals for the Reds and is expected to start against West Brom tomorrow. And Carragher believes Salah is going through a similar issue with Liverpool as his former teammate Owen did.

“The closest comparison – in terms of attitude to goalscoring – to Salah I can come up with is Michael Owen. He raced towards 100 goals in not time without ever really becoming the fans’ favourite. No matter what Michael did, he was never the first name sung before every home game,” Carragher said.

“Part of that stemmed from the feeling he was more an international superstar than a Liverpool one. Rightly or wrongly, a lot of it comes from how related a character or personality. With Owen and Salah, the moment they started receiving acclaim, stories emerged about the likelihood of a big move abroad”.

Carragher also suggested that both Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino are above Salah in Liverpool fans’ minds in terms of who they’d lose if one of the front three had to be sold.

You get a feeling here that the wheels are being put in motion by both Salah and his agent to try and orchestrate a move away in the future.

Carragher mentions it in his piece, that the interview in Spain was done with some sort of motive behind it. Of course, for now, while Salah is in fine form, it doesn’t matter.

But if his performances dip and fans start coming back to stadiums in bigger numbers soon, then the Kop could quickly become pretty vocal about their Egyptian goalscorer before long.
