Jamie Carragher questions Everton players’ self-belief

Everton slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat against newly-promoted Aston Villa on Friday night. Whilst the hosts were able to celebrate their first win since their return to the Premier League, Marco Silva must reflect upon an error-strewn display from his side.

Far too many Everton players under-performed. Andre Gomes, in particular, produced a dire display. However, despite this, Everton were still able to carve out goalscoring opportunities. Had both Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi not spurned late chances, the Toffees would have returned to Goodison Park with a point in tow.

Sky Sports pundit and legendary former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher was not impressed with Everton’s showing in front of goal. After the match on Sky Sports, Carragher said, “they’ve got to prove that they can go and score goals. The goalscoring problem, one may be quality, but also I don’t think that the Everton players actually believe that they’re going to score. Around the edge of the box, so often, they were just passing it to each other…too often they were all passing responsibility”.

TBR’s view

Everton certainly had chances against Aston Villa. However, not for the first time this season, they failed to take them. The Toffees have actually only found the back of the net once so far this season. That is nowhere near good enough, especial considering the attacking talent Silva has at his disposal. The likes of Moise Kean, Richarlison, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Walcott, Iwobi and Gylfi Sigurdsson have to start scoring.

Carragher is right to question the players’ belief. Goalscorers need to be confident, and Everton do not currently look assured in front of goal. Silva needs to work on building up his attackers’ self-belief. If Everton are to stand a chance of achieving European qualification this season, they must become more prolific quickly.
