Jamie Carragher picked out defender Trent Alexander-Arnold as a star man during Liverpool’s win in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Reds secured a 2-0 victory at Anfield against Danish side FC Midtjylland in the Champions League group stages, but they were far from their fluent best and could’ve easily dropped points had their opponents been more clinical in front of goal.
Jurgen Klopp’s side managed just two shots on target and one was a decisive opening goal in the 55th minute.
Summer signing Diogo Jota continued his positive start on Merseyside with a simple tap-in from close-range, with attack-minded full-back Alexander-Arnold supplying the assist with a clever pass across goal.
Mohamed Salah’s stoppage time penalty wrapped up the European win, but Liverpool will walk away with concern after stand-in centre-back Fabinho was forced off injured and they are already without commanding defender Virgil van Dijk through injury.
Carragher was majorly impressed with England international Alexander-Arnold for his performance on the Champions Leagues stage and felt he was head and shoulders above anybody else on the pitch.
The 22-year-old right-back was at his creative best with some excellent delivers from wide areas and it looks like he may be coming back into form, which is a massive bonus for Liverpool.
TBR’s View:
Alexander-Arnold’s individual start to the season has looked a bit slow by his phenomenal standard, but he looked on it in midweek and that should give him a lot more confidence going forward.
The Liverpool-born youngster was consistent with his defensive work and gave very little away, while going forward he flexed his attacking muscles but unfortunately his teammates weren’t on the same wavelength for the majority of the contest.
It’s going to add more pressure on him, Andy Robertson and Joe Gomez to raise their standards defensively following the latest injury blow and they may need to help guide an experienced player alongside them.
