Jamie Carragher picks Liverpool duo for praise after Atletico Madrid defeat

Liverpool were sensationally dumped out of the Champions League after losing 3-2 to Atletico Madrid at Anfield.

The Reds were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Gini Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino, with the second coming just five minutes into extra time.

Atletico were defiant that this would be their night, however. First Joao Felix capitalised on a poor clearance from Adrian to setup Marcos Llorente to score and claim a vital away goal.

On the stroke of half-time in extra time, Llorente doubled his tally firing home from the edge of the box.

With Liverpool going gung ho to get the two goals they required, Alvaro Morata raced clear in the dying moments to pop a seal on a famous victory for Los Rojiblancos.

After the game, former defender jumped on Twitter to give his thoughts on the game.

He was clearly upset with the result but said he enjoyed the performance and was quick to praise two Liverpool performers.

Although Trent Alexander-Arnold played well, the night did perhaps belong to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The resurgence of the midfielder was telling and his performance will have delighted England boss Gareth Southgate.

Form

Since his cruciate knee injury, he has struggled for consistency but this was a throwback to the Oxlade-Chamberlain of old.

Liverpool must help him get back to his best. Last night highlighted that he is edging back to his old self.

With Fabinho in the middle, Liverpool do look overly defensive. The £120,000-a-week player offers a bit more guile and a determination to drive forwards with the ball.

Carragher was right to praise the performance. On another night Liverpool would have taken their chances and progressed with ease.

It wasn’t to be and the Reds must not put their sole attention on claiming the Premier League title.
