Jamie Carragher names who he now thinks are favourites for the title - Arsenal or Manchester City

Jamie Carragher has named Arsenal as his Premier League title favourites ahead of reigning champions Manchester City.

Carragher wrote in his Telegraph column that the Gunners are now ready to go on and win the title as they gear up to face Manchester United this weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners revolution has been turbo-charged this season and they sit five points clear at the top of the table.

It is City who have looked the shakier in recent weeks, with Arsenal continuing to power on but they face another huge test on Sunday.

Carragher names Arsenal Premier League title favourites

Carragher wrote: “The question around Arsenal in trying to end Manchester City’s domestic dominance is whether these teams will evolve to be like Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp, or Tottenham Hotspur under Mauricio Pochettino. Arsenal are at that point.

“They are on the threshold of being title winners and must show they can take that final step. At the moment they are slight favourites because even with 19 games remaining, if they win their game in hand eight points is a big lead.

“If it extends to 10 or 11 rather than gets cut to six or five, Arsenal will enter ‘it is theirs to lose’ territory, piling the pressure on City to go on one of their long, winning runs to catch-up. Nothing I have seen so far suggests Arsenal will implode.

“It would be brilliant for the Premier League if they last the course, easing fears that Manchester City’s financial power has made the title race predictable.”

The popular view is that City will come through and hit top gear at some stage, like they usually do, but the signs are not really there yet.

Arsenal are dealing with the pressure better, but it is important to remember we are at the halfway point of the season in terms of games played, so there is a long way to go.

But the Gunners have been the most impressive side in the division this term and deserve the tag of favourites, even moreso if they beat United on Sunday to lay down another marker of their title credentials.
