Jamie Carragher has claimed that he “felt sorry” for Tottenham defenders Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier after the Carabao Cup final.
Spurs’ wait for silverware continues after they were beaten 1-0 on Sunday by Manchester City in the League Cup final.
It was a match where they struggled to find any kind of spark going forward, with their attackers extremely quiet at Wembley Stadium.
However, the centre-halves and goalkeeper delivered excellent individual efforts.
Carragher has explained during analysis of the cup final loss that he felt sorry for the two Spurs centre-backs, as he feels they were given very little support in possession from those around them.
“I felt sorry for the two centre-backs,” Carragher said on Sky Sports Main Event channel (7:35pm, 26 April).
“Alderweireld, nothing on, so goes long. They’re (centre-backs) trying to play out, but no courage [from teammates] to actually get on the ball. Okay, let’s go long, no other option for the centre-backs.”

TBR’s View:
Finding the right combination in the heart of defence has been an issue throughout the whole of the season for the north London club, but interim Spurs boss Ryan Mason was proven right in his selection of Alderweireld and Dier at the weekend.
They both defended superbly against Man City, and had goalkeeper Lloris backing them up behind.
It’s a match though that the team will look back with regret on after failing to really lay a glove on their opponent in the final third.
There should still be big question marks though over who the preferred centre-back combination should be next season.
