Jamie Carragher makes top four claim concerning Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has told the Pitch to Post Preview Podcast on Sky Sports that he believes that Liverpool would gladly accept a top four finish if offered that now.

It has been a difficult campaign for Jurgen Klopp’s men. They have obviously lost a number of key players to injury.

The Reds have now lost three of their last five in all competitions. And they now sit fourth in the table, just two points above fifth place West Ham.

Crucially, they are seven points off league leaders Manchester City, who have a game in hand. Carragher is seemingly not ruling Liverpool out of the title race. But he did suggest that their focus will be elsewhere for the time-being.

“Andy Robertson has come out and said Liverpool aren’t in the title race, and I think that is the right way to look at it at the moment,” he told the Pitch to Post Preview Podcast.

“Liverpool have to be looking at the top four positions, and to say the obvious, take each game as it comes because the form is so down.

“There are so many changes to the team that you are never quite sure what it’s going to be. Alisson was out at the last minute against Brighton and Liverpool are still waiting for players to come back.

“So I think from now, if you were to offer Liverpool a top-four finish they would take that and shake on it.”

In many respects, Liverpool have the perfect game up next. They host City at Anfield on Sunday.

Of course, it could lead to a result that all but dashes their hopes of retaining their title. But should Liverpool win, the gap will be down to just four points with 13 games remaining.

Klopp’s men have produced some of their finest performances on the biggest of stages. And they have often relished having their backs against the wall.

So while their target may be a top four finish, it may only take one positive result to tempt the champions to set their sights on winning back their crown.
