Jamie Carragher lauds Alisson as Liverpool beat Southampton
Jamie Carragher told Sky Sports (broadcast on 8/5; 22:04) that Alisson produced a huge performance as he named the Liverpool goalkeeper as man of the match in their victory over Southampton at Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side got back to winning ways as they beat the Saints 2-0. The result keeps the champions in the mix for the top four spots in the Premier League.
However, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men had the opportunities to spring a surprise. Thankfully, Alisson produced a superb display to keep the visitors at bay.
He made a brilliant stop to deny Che Adams when the game was goalless in the first-half. Whoscored shows that he made six saves during the contest – two more than Fraser Forster.
And Carragher suggested that the 28-year-old was the standout performer as he was asked to name his man of the match as the full-time whistle loomed.
“I think a few Liverpool performances have been pretty good. Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back’s done well, Mane with the goal, he’s always looked dangerous. Nat Phillips should get a mention as well, some vital blocks and cutting out crosses at 1-0,” he told Sky Sports.
“But I just think the goalkeeper’s role tonight’s been huge. I think the save at 0-0 was vital. Liverpool go up the other end and get that goal. And also, it was almost a tackle really he made in the second-half as well as someone got in behind. So yeah, man of the match.”
Like many of the Liverpool squad, Alisson – who earns £150,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has endured an extremely difficult campaign. There have been times when he has made extremely costly mistakes.
However, he has also provided reminders of why he is one of the very best in the world. Saturday’s game saw him prove a point once again.
If he is ready to rediscover his best form over a long period, Liverpool could be in a fantastic position to put this year behind them.
