Jamie Carragher has heard something about Kobbie Mainoo he completely disagrees with

Kobbie Mainoo is quickly establishing himself as English football’s next superstar.

The midfielder has been making waves for Manchester United over the past few months, while he’s now making a serious impact for England.

However, after playing just a handful of senior games, there’s still a lot we don’t know about Mainoo as a player.

Indeed, we’re still trying to figure out what sort of player Mainoo is, and speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has been discussing some of the analysis of Mainoo and how he feels the player is being misinterpreted.

Jamie Carragher disagrees with what’s being said about Kobbie Mainoo

Carragher spoke about Mainoo and this idea that he’s a holding midfield player.

“People are talking about him and there’s this thing building that he’s a holding midfielder. I don’t really see it. He’s this guy who dribbles and runs forward,’ Carragher said.

“There’s this talk about United needing a holding midfield player, but I don’t think he’s that. I thought that performance was sensational.”

“Sometimes you look at a young player and it feels like it happens every tournament, it feels like this time of the season someone really young out of nowhere – whether it was Rooney, Michael Owen, Bellingham a couple of years ago – they just go.”

“We know for a fact this kid is on the plane now on the back of last night and you are looking at the starting 11 and, I know you don’t want to get carried away, but he’s definitely going and it’s just whether he plays now.”

Kobbie Mainoo is too good to be a holding player

We absolutely agree with Carragher here.

Mainoo is being shoehorned into this typecast holding midfield role because that’s what Manchester United need right now, but when you look at his skillset, that’s the last position he should be playing.

Indeed, Mainoo has way too much technical ability to just be a player who sits in front of the back four. He’s brilliant on the ball and he can be a proper creative force further up the pitch.

Manchester United, obviously, have holding midfield issues at the moment, so that’s where Mainoo is needed, but that shouldn’t be where he plays in the long-term.

Mainoo’s future will almost certainly be as more of a creative midfield option.
