Jamie Carragher fancied Leeds to win if Pablo Hernandez’s shot had gone in v Leicester

Jamie Carragher has explained that he thought Leeds United could have beaten Leicester City on Monday night if Pablo Hernandez’s second-half effort at goal had gone in.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side were on the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline at Elland Road in the Premier League fixture, as they were unable to get the better of an organised Leicester team that are now second in the table.

Stuart Dallas’ goal early in the second-half reduced the first-half deficit to 2-1 and the Whites were so close to equalising when 35-year-old midfielder Hernandez saw his effort from the edge of the box ricochet off the woodwork.

Brendan Rodgers’ team managed to withstand a sustained period of Leeds possession in their half, but they scored two late goals to wrap up three points in clinical fashion.

Carragher felt that the momentum was with Leeds for a stage in the second-half and believes the Hernandez moment was decisive.

“It shows how tight football games are and they are defined on whether a chance goes in or just under the crossbar,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (10:23pm, 3 November).

“Hernandez here can make it 2-2, a great effort. If that goes in you then fancy Leeds to go on and win the game and it doesn’t end up 4-1 looking like a rout.”

TBR’s View:

Any honest Leeds fan will be able to admit that they didn’t deserve anything against Leicester, who look like they are in for another successful season and they’ll be chasing the European positions.

But it’s worth nothing that the Yorkshire giants are only just back in the top-flight and 10 points from the opening seven league games is a decent start, especially as they are missing a couple of key players.

Bielsa’s side travel to Crystal Palace in the final match before the international break and three points at Selhurst Park would certainly keep up the feelgood factor.
