Jamie Carragher didn’t want Marc Guehi at Liverpool last season for one huge reason

Liverpool are now pushing to sign Marc Guehi.

A move for the Crystal Palace No.6 is now accelerating, just days after the south Londoners defeated Liverpool in the Community Shield at Wembley.

Steve Parish conceded Crystal Palace must sell Guehi in the aftermath of that win, as the England international sees his contract expire in 11 months.

A post from Paul Joyce of The Times even states that Liverpool could land Marc Guehi for as little as £30m due to his contract situation – a specific detail which will please Jamie Carragher after what he said in August 2024.

Jamie Carragher was critical of lofty Marc Guehi valuation

Crystal Palace rejected a £60m bid from Newcastle for the central defender last summer, and also rebuffed a £70m offer from Tottenham on deadline day in February 2025.

The bid from Spurs did meet what Crystal Palace wanted for Guehi – but it simply came too late in the window for those at Selhurst Park to entertain it.

When Crystal Palace demanded £70m from Newcastle a few months beforehand, however – in a summer where Liverpool also considered moving for Guehi after his stunning UEFA Euro 2024 campaign – Carragher felt it was steep.

Speaking live on Sky Sports (7.30pm BST on 25th August 2024) following a draw between Newcastle and Bournemouth, the man born in Bootle said: “I mean, Guehi, we are talking about £70m. I think he is a really good player. I wouldn’t pay £70m for him, though.”

With these comments in mind, Carragher is surely delighted by the fact Liverpool look set to sign the man born in Abidjan for a sum in the region of £30m to £35m.

For a 25-year-old who can boast 132 Premier League appearances and 23 caps for England, that is a total bargain.

What Arne Slot did with Marc Guehi before Community Shield now seems telling

Before Crystal Palace and Liverpool walked out at Wembley on Sunday, Arne Slot made a beeline for Guehi and shook his hand as Virgil van Dijk watched on with a smirk on his face.

At the time, it was seemingly nothing more than the Dutchman paying his respects to the opposition captain.

Now – however – with Liverpool advancing in talks to sign Guehi, it feels like it was more of a ‘see you soon’ from Slot.
