'Just like Nunez': Jamie Carragher takes aim at supporters after Haaland makes City debut against Liverpool

Liverpool saw off Manchester City 3-1 today to win the Community Shield and draw first blood in what will no doubt be a pulsating Premier League season.

Mo Salah’s second half penalty put the Reds back in front before Darwin Nunez put the icing on the cake with an injury time header to make it the perfect afternoon for both he and Liverpool.

Of course, all eyes were on the strikers today for both clubs. Nunez started on the bench while City boss Pep Guardiola threw Erling Haaland straight into the action. Frustratingly for Haaland, he endured a tough time in front of goal which culminated in a skied effort late on which about summed up his day.

And Carragher, who was commenting on the game on Twitter, seemed to take aim at fans digging out Haaland for his performance, much like some had with Nunez just a few weeks ago in pre-season.

Nunez and Haaland both arrive in England with big reputations, albeit Haaland probably has the bigger one from his time in Germany with Dortmund.

Both players will find the net this season, and while Haaland did endure a bit of a torrid time today, there is little doubt his time will come in front of goal.

TBR’s View: Carragher Bang On About Haaland and Nunez

Ultimately, it’s just the way things go nowadays in football. Someone has a poor game or misses a chance or two and certain sections of social media get too carried away. We see it week in, week out.

For Carragher to point it out just shows that these things don’t go unnoticed by the pundits and players. And frankly, the sooner it leaves the game, the better.

Haaland will be just fine. As will Darwin Nunez.
