Jamie Carragher criticises Arsenal defender David Luiz’s approach to the game

Jamie Carragher has criticised Arsenal defender David Luiz for playing in a way which protects himself rather than getting the team on the front foot.

On Sky Sports, Carragher said he’s pleased to see Calum Chambers in the side ahead of Luiz because that’s the only way Arsenal can get better.

He said: “Sometimes you look at a big mistake in a goal; Calum Chambers loses the ball second half, Manchester City go through on goal. Everyone can see that. But these are things that kill the team. It’s your job and sometimes you think you’re looking after yourself, but you’re hurting the rest of the team. That’s why David Luiz isn’t playing.

“I’m glad he’s gone with Calum Chambers. We know Luiz isn’t good enough, that’s all he does, drops off to protect himself. But he’s catching the disease as well too – make the mistakes being aggressive and going forward, I’m sure that’s what Freddie Ljungberg wants. Do it that way, doing the right thing.”

TBR’s View – Luiz’s arrival has just brought more chaos to Arsenal

The argument for bringing Luiz to Arsenal was that he was relatively low-cost and would bring experience and a winning mentality to the club.

But he has actually just exhibited the worst facets of his game – rashness and petulance – at a club which already had no shortage of liabilities at the back.
