Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has compared the current Tottenham Hotspur side to the Anfield outfit at the start of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

Spurs appointed Antonio Conte earlier this week, replacing Nuno Espirito Santo with the 52-year-old serial winner.

Tottenham are currently punching well below their weight and have flattered to deceive under Nuno this season.

Spurs were Klopp’s first opponents after he took the reins at Liverpool in October 2015, playing out a 0-0 draw in north London.

At the time, the Reds were far from their best – although they finished second in 2013-14, they finished sixth the following season.

Indeed, Klopp’s first season saw them end the campaign in eighth place.

Liverpool have since returned to the top of English football, winning the Premier League and Champions League under Klopp.

And Carragher feels Tottenham are in the same boat as the Reds were back then, stressing Conte will need time just as Klopp did.

“Conte is a different breed of coach to Nuno,” Carragher wrote in The Telegraph. “But he will see identical issues in his first few months.

“Spurs in 2021 have more in common with Liverpool in October 2015 when Klopp took over.

“You could see within a matter of days how the style would evolve and mood and culture around the club improve.

“But it still needed three seasons for a team to emerge which was capable of challenging for the biggest honours.

“Only one Liverpool player who started Klopp’s first game was in the starting XI by the time of the Champions League final three years later.

“It will need a similar approach for Spurs to get back into the Champions League given the standard – and financial power – of their Premier League rivals.”
