Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ The Football Show (Thursday, 09:07am) that he believes Mauricio Pochettino is the best available manager to take Newcastle United forward – weighing in on the debate surrounding Steve Bruce’s future.

Sky Sports claimed on Wednesday that Newcastle’s prospective new owners are willing to offer Argentine manager Pochettino an enormous £19million a season – or £365,000 a week in order to convince the former Spurs manager to move to Tyneside.

Pochettino is currently out of work since being sacked by Tottenham earlier this season, after a dismal start to the 2019-20 campaign – just months after reaching the Champions League final. He is said to be Newcastle’s number one target.

Carragher was asked about Newcastle’s reported interest in Pochettino on Thursday morning, and stated that the Tottenham icon is the best available manager – but is unsure Pochettino would choose Spurs over the likes of Europe’s biggest clubs.

“People in football would love Steve Bruce to get a chance,” Carragher said. “But if, as an owner, he is not the man you want to run your club, then why give him £200, £300million? If a new regime comes in, they don’t want Bruce, then it is their choice.

“Newcastle should not be criticised if they change their manager. Pochettino is the best available manager. He is getting linked with bigger jobs, and Newcastle will not be right at the top to begin with. It would be a big decision if he did put his hand up.”

TBR’s view – Carragher has it bang on, unfortunately for Bruce

There is no point handing Bruce an enormous transfer kitty if the owners want to go in a different direction to the current manager. What must happen, is for the new owners and Bruce to meet and to discuss the future.

If the two parties agree on a route, then Bruce should be given the chance to take Newcastle back to their former glories. Certainly, the former Aston Villa and Hull City boss has deserved it with his work this season.

But if Bruce’s vision does not match that of the new owners, then Pochettino or another well-suited boss should be hired.
