Jamie Carragher comments on Aston Villa star Ezri Konsa, amid reported Liverpool interest

Jamie Carragher has told Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football that he cannot praise Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa enough, amid reports that Liverpool are considering the English centre-back ahead of the summer transfer window.

Konsa, 23, was in stunning form once again on Saturday evening as Villa got their revenge on Leeds United – with a 1-0 win at Elland Road, having been beaten 3-0 earlier in the season. That is, despite coming under huge pressure throughout the game.

In the 22 Premier League matches Konsa has played this season, Villa have conceded just 26 goals – keeping a hugely impressive 11 clean sheets. Clearly, working under John Terry has helped – but other clubs are becoming interested.

The Athletic have claimed that both Liverpool and Tottenham are interested in signing Konsa – who was only bought for £12million (Athletic) in the summer of 2019 from Brentford. Carragher raved about the uncapped Englishman.

“He has made a huge difference. He throws his body at the ball – I can’t talk enough about how impressed I have been with him defensively. He doesn’t do silly things. He’s very brave in getting the blocks in, but he is cool and composed,” Carragher said.

TBR’s view – Konsa would be perfect for Liverpool

But would he start when everyone is fit – and therefore, would he move to Anfield? Without doubt, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk start when they are back from injury, but could Konsa break into that defensive partnership?

It is difficult to tell. If Gomez shows signs that he is plateaued somewhat due to his injury, then Konsa can certainly eclipse him and partner van Dijk. But the chances are that a move to Liverpool would see him become first reserve.

A move to Tottenham, or simply staying at Villa, would see Konsa be first choice.
