Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes the Reds need to sign three new players who can come into the starting XI to give them a ‘jolt’.
Liverpool have fallen well behind Manchester City in the race for the Premier League title this season. After keeping it close for so long, injuries and poor performances have eventually caught up with the Reds.
City, then, appear to have the title in the bag barring a minor miracle. And Carragher, assessing Liverpool for Sky Sports, believes three new players are needed to come straight into the starting XI.
“I still think they will be back – but they need three players,” Carragher said.
“They need a centre-back – maybe he’s joined now in Ozan Kabak – they need someone to replace Wijnaldum, and they need someone in the front three. And I’m not talking about players on the bench. I’m talking about players to come into the team like Matip, Wijnaldum, and Mane did, like Salah, Van Dijk, and Alisson. That’s what Liverpool need.”
Liverpool moved last summer to sign Thiago and there has been signs recently he is beginning to tick. Meanwhile, January saw the arrivals of the aforementioned Kabak and Preston defender, Ben Davies.
Big players have been linked in recent weeks, including the likes of Kylian Mbappe.
TBR View: Carragher has a point here, Liverpool have reached a mini crossroads
Every team goes through these little phases. The Reds have been superb in the last few seasons so it’s natural that the cycle is coming to a bit of an end.
Wijnaldum leaving makes one of the spots easier, while defensive frailties this season have highlighted the issue there. Finally, a striker is needed as the likes of Origi are simply not up to stepping in for Firmino and Salah when injured.
Carragher is spot on really here. Liverpool will be back, but they need a fresh influx.
