Jamie Carragher claims Joel Matip must start for Liverpool against Sheffield United if fit

Liverpool took on Ajax in the Champions League last night, defeating the Dutch giants 1-0 after an own goal from Nicolas Tagliafico.

It was a tough game for Liverpool, as they looked to get back on track after a controversial draw with city rivals Everton, where Virgil van Dijk was ruled out for much of the season with a knee injury.

Two standout performers were Liverpool’s centre-backs, who stepped in for Van Dijk. Joe Gomez was solid and used his pace to good impact whilst Fabinho continues to showcase his versatility with a tremendous display.

The Brazilian was class at the back and his goal-line clearance from Dusan Tadic’s lobbed effort eventually proved to be crucial.

So should both Gomez and Fabinho remain the first-choice even when Joel Matip, who also missed the game through injury, is back in action.

According to one former Liverpool centre-back the Cameroonian should be back in action if ready for the weekend clash with Sheffield United, but for his aerial ability.

The Blades have some imposing figures in their side who could cause a threat from corners and free-kicks and Matip might be a more imposing figure at the back, especially if Fabinho can be moved back into midfield to combat the drive and aerial prowess of Sander Berge.

But it was undoubtedly reassuring to see that Fabinho and Gomez are ready to step in place of Van Dijk this season.
