Jamie Carrahger has claimed that Premier League duo West Ham and Everton have both gone chasing superstar signings in recent times, but believes they already have the answer at their doorstep.
Pundit Carragher has explained that West Ham striker Michail Antonio and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin are two elite talents at their respective clubs.
Antonio, 30, scored a super overhead kick at the weekend in the draw with Manchester City and has become such a pivotal figure for David Moyes’ team at the London Stadium.
The Englishman has scored three goals in his opening six appearances of the season and his remarkable form at the back end of the last campaign helped to ensure they avoided relegation.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Calvert-Lewin earned his senior England debut recently after being rewarded for his colossal improvement in front of goal.
He’s now scored 10 goals in his first eight appearances this season and is playing his best football under manager Carlo Ancelotti.
“The thing with Antonio, and I think he’s similar to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, is that he has been at the club for a few years,” Carragher told Sky Sports’ Main Event channel (10:40pm, 26 October).
“There is always that question mark. Are they good enough? You always think they can do better. Everton go and spend £25-30million on [Moise] Kean. West Ham go and spend £40million on [Sebastian] Haller.
“It’s not until they spend the big money and you bring somebody in and you think ‘no, they are better than them’. It’s almost like they need to make a big mistake in the transfer market to say ‘okay, these lads are good enough in some ways’.
“You get that a lot with teams at that level they are always chasing that striker that they think is a superstar type, when really they’ve got someone on their doorstep within the club who actually ticks all those boxes.”

TBR’s View:
Everton have really been searching for a quality goalscorer since they lost Romelu Lukaku back in 2017 and it looks like there patience with Calvert-Lewin is now beginning to pay off.
He’s been a regular in the Toffees side in recent times and has played 142 first-team games for them, but it’s only in the past couple of months that he’s found a prolific goalscoring touch and aged 23 he’s beginning to mature into quite the player.
Meanwhile, Antonio may have been a victim of his own versatility in recent years as he’s been slotted in as an attacker, midfielder and at full-back during his time with West Ham.
But he’s made the centre-forward position his own in the last year and there aren’t many that can hold the ball up as well as him, plus he’s got the speed, power and energy that defenders must hate.
