Jamie Carragher has shared what he sees happen to Manchester United in every game Erik ten Hag’s side play that leaves him baffled.
The jury very much remains out on Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford. Manchester United enjoyed a promising first year with the Dutchman in charge.
However, they have failed to kick on in this campaign. They do have two games in hand, but they currently find themselves 11 points off the top four in the Premier League.
There have been some brighter signs. The form of Kobbie Mainoo has been a massive positive. And Rasmus Hojlund is another who seems to be finding his feet at Old Trafford.
But there are doubts over whether ten Hag will still be at Manchester United next season. And one of the reasons is how vulnerable the Red Devils look defensively.
As shown by Whoscored, only Sheffield United concede more shots per game than Manchester United. That is a remarkable statistic when you consider how much they have spent on defenders in the last few years.
Jamie Carragher baffled when he watches Manchester United
Certainly, Jamie Carragher cannot believe that they have not made more of an effort to try and address that fact, as he was speaking on Stick to Football.
“I can see that in a one off game where someone has lost their head of they get a bit excited and they are running all over the place but it happens so often, the same thing, that surely the manager must accept it to a certain point and say okay there is something in it that he likes,” he said.

“I can’t work it out. It’s not like Pep or Klopp when we talk about overloading midfield and transitions and really complicated, we are talking about something that we would expect from the teams coming up.”
So much work ahead for Erik ten Hag
Only six goalkeepers have faced more shots on target this season than André Onana, according to FBRef.
Thankfully for United, only three goalkeepers have performed better against their expected goals conceded than the Cameroonian (FBRef). So he has got them out of plenty of trouble.
But clearly, many will have doubts about whether United can progress while they are so open. It is not like they are often blowing teams away at the other end of the pitch. It is two months since they scored three times in a league games.
That arguably just shows that there remains so much work ahead before United are back amongst the title contenders in the Premier League again.
