Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has admitted that news of Jurgen Klopp’s impending Anfield exit left him absolutely “devastated”.
The Reds icon, speaking on CBS Sports during the first round of Champions League knockout games, said he “thought it was a joke” at first.
Indeed, Carragher said he felt the breaking news on Klopp would’ve been along the lines of him staying, perhaps even penning a new contract at Anfield.
At the end of January, Klopp stunned the football world when he announced that he would be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
The 56-year-old, whose Reds contract was due to run until the summer of 2026, attributed his decision to “running out of energy”.
Klopp also confirmed that he had told the Liverpool bosses about his intention to stand down back in November last year.

Jamie Carragher ‘couldn’t believe’ Jurgen Klopp decision over Liverpool future
On Tuesday evening, Carragher was asked by CBS Sports host Kate Abdo what his first reaction was when he heard the news.
“Devastated,” replied the Liverpool icon. “I thought it was a joke when I was first told! Couldn’t believe it, I was just stunned for the next hour where I was.
“I couldn’t believe that he’d decided to finish at Liverpool. I actually thought, the fact that, almost a new team that he’s built this season, doing really well in lots of competitions, I did feel it was almost re-energised.
“I actually did feel he would actually be signing a new contract, because I always felt ‘where could he go from Liverpool?’ He’s in a job he would never be sacked from, no matter how poor it went for him.
“I just thought, with the new team, when news came out, I was expecting it to break that Jurgen Klopp would be staying. It just shows how much last season took out of him.”
Liverpool players will hope to deliver silverware in final Jurgen Klopp season
Klopp’s impact at Liverpool has been nothing short of seismic, and as such, it’s understandable that news of his departure would be just as impactful.
When Klopp first took the reins at Anfield, the Reds were in a slump. The only major trophy they had won in a while was the League Cup.
The German set about rebuilding Liverpool and, within a few years, had them challenging for titles and cups, getting them to the Champions League final in 2018.
A year later, Liverpool went on to lift Europe’s top title, and 12 months on, the Reds won the one trophy that they had wanted more than any after so long – the Premier League title.
Now, the Reds are well placed to bring the curtain down on Klopp’s Anfield reign in the best possible way – with yet more major trophies.
