James Vaughan transfer has surely scuppered Sunderland’s hopes of Will Grigg arrival

It looks as though Portsmouth are closing in on a deal for James Vaughan. As reported by The Portsmouth News, the player has trained with the club this morning ahead of completing a switch from Wigan Athletic.

Of course, this could surely be a big blow for Sunderland.

Sunderland have been chasing fellow Wigan forward Will Grigg recently. As reported by the Roker Report, Sunderland’s latest approach for the player valued at £1.5 million but was rejected, with the Championship side wanting £3 million.

But with Vaughan gone, Wigan would be leaving themselves short in attack with Grigg’s departure, even with Leon Clarke’s arrival yesterday.

Sunderland fans have two reasons why this new development will sting. Firstly, Portsmouth are getting Vaughan and the South-Coast club are major automatic promotion rivals in League One.

Secondly, Vaughan had a poor spell at Sunderland last year. Signed by Simon Grayson in a deal reported to be worth £900,000 by Sky Sports.

After six months in which he struggled to find any form, he was allowed to leave. Now, this Sunderland flop’s latest transfer move has surely ended the club’s hopes of signing a proven League One scorer.
