In January, Liverpool were linked with a host of players. One position in which they were rumoured to be considering strengthening was at centre-back. Liverpool were facing something of a defensive crisis. Injuries to Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip saw the likes of Fabinho at the heart of defence and teenager Ki-Jana Hoever making his first-team debut.

Reports suggested that one player Liverpool were hoping to bring in was Burnley defender James Tarkowski. It was rumoured that Liverpool were hoping to sign the England international on loan with a view to buy but The Sun, suggested Burnley would only sell the defender for £50 million.

That sort of price-tag put Liverpool off and for some, it was a surprise to see him linked with Anfield.

Tarkowski was struggling to find his best form, as Burnley struggled in the Premier League.

But recently the 26-year-old has been in fantastic form for Sean Dyche’s men.

Yesterday he was the man-of-the-match as Burnley defeated Liverpool’s title rivals Tottenham Hotspur, potentially putting the final nail in the coffin of their title hopes.

His composed performance showcased his best talents and when Gareth Southgate names his England team for the upcoming international break, it will be no surprise to see Tarkowski’s name back in the running.

Liverpool would be right to continue keeping tabs on the player, who could easily be a fantastic recruit at Anfield. He is finally showing that he has what it takes once again.
