Things are looking bleak at Everton right now.
The Toffees haven’t picked up a point yet in the Premier League, and they’ve just suffered an embarrassing 3-2 loss to Bournemouth after being 2-0 up late in the day,.
However, it hasn’t always been doom and gloom for Everton.
Indeed, cast your mind back a few years and you’ll remember Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton side were flying high at one point.
Everton were 2nd after 15 games in the 2020/21 season, and while they would eventually crumble, this was an exciting team.
Speaking on Everton’s YouTube channel, James Rodriguez has been discussing this Everton team, and he says that this team could’ve finished in the Champions League spots if they had a bigger squad.
Everton could’ve finished top four
Rodriguez shared his verdict on what this team was capable of.
“Everything was working really well and we were playing very good football. There was a great understanding between all the players who were playing together at the time.
“We were all in a period of great form as players. Everyone in the starting XI as well as the lads coming on from the bench were having a positive influence in every game.
“I reckon if we had a slightly bigger squad we would’ve been able to get into the Champions League for sure.”

Everton could’ve pushed on
Rodriguez is right, this Everton team had what it took to seriously push at the top end of the Premier League.
Unfortunately, depth and injuries took their toll, but this was a squad that was built to succeed.
Carlo Ancelotti got the best out of all of his players, including Rodriguez, and if everyone had managed to stay fit, Everton could have qualified for Europe that season.
Unfortunately things didn’t work out that way and the Toffees would eventually finish 10th in the table.
