Senior Liverpool star James Milner has lavished praised on youngster Curtis Jones, claiming he has taken ‘massive steps’ in the last 12 months.
Jones was handed a rare start for the Reds against MK Dons on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup, and his solid performance landed him the Man of the Match award.
Jones was one of a number of young players trusted by Jurgen Klopp, with Rhian Brewster, Caoimhín Kelleher and Harvey Elliott all given starts.

Milner, a scorer from left-back in the 2-0 win, said of the 18-year-old (Evening Standard): “I’ve seen a massive difference in Curtis in the last year. He’s always had that ability but seems a bit more mature now; [he’s] defending well, getting his angles right when he’s defending.
“I think he’s realised as well that if you want to play for Liverpool, that’s as important as the stuff on the ball. Not only that, he’s got so much ability and skills and tricks, and it’s about using them in the right area.”
The 33-year-old paid Jones a big compliment even before a ball was kicked on Wednesday, by admitting he told the youngster ‘I wouldn’t want to defend you in the box’.
TBR’s view
As a young midfielder looking to make it at Anfield, Jones will be hugely encouraged by his showing in midweek and by the resulting comments from senior star Milner.

Liverpool have so many midfield options in the first-team and it will be difficult, but perhaps he showed enough to warrant a bit more game time going forwards.
Klopp obviously likes to put his faith in youth and with a lot of hard work, perhaps Jones can even be the long-term replacement for Milner himself.
