James Milner has hinted that he wants to extend his Liverpool contract, The Mirror reports. Milner – who scored Liverpool’s winner against Leicester City yesterday – hopes his goal will help his chances of staying beyond the end of this season.

Milner is out of contract in summer 2020 and there has been no progress on an extension so far. But the versatile player – who operates in midfield or at full-back – seems to favour an Anfield extension.

The former England international has been with Liverpool since summer 2015 and he has played nearly 200 times. Operating in a variety of roles with starts and substitute cameos, Milner has proven his reliability.

Jurgen Klopp seems to be a big fan of the industrious 33-year-old. When quizzed about his future beyond next summer, Milner said (via The Mirror): “Hopefully scoring today hasn’t done any harm so we will see what happens.”

TBR’s view

Milner’s comments seem to hint at him wanting to stay. Despite Milner remaining coy about his future options, the word ‘hopefully’ implies that he is eager to pen new terms.

Liverpool should seriously consider keeping the veteran midfielder around. Despite his age, he provides strong cover in a number of positions and he always does a professional job. Milner seems to be a popular figure with his Liverpool team-mates so he is worth keeping at the club.
