James Maddison has shared what Ange Postecoglou told his Tottenham Hotspur players at halftime today.

Tottenham thrashed top-four rivals Aston Villa 4-0 away from home on Sunday afternoon.

After a dull first half, Spurs turned on the style after the break and netted four times en route to a comfortable win at Villa Park.

James Maddison got Ange Postecoglou’s side on their way with a simple tap-in after an exceptional cross from Pape Matar Sarr in the 50th minute.

Brennan Johnson netted just three minutes later and after John McGinn’s red card for a reckless tackle on Destiny Udogie, Tottenham cruised to victory.

Heung-min Son and Timo Werner wrapped up the win with late strikes and it’s fair to say Spurs outclassed Villa in the second half.

Maddison shares what Postecoglou said at halftime

Speaking to Sky Sports after today’s win, Maddison admitted that Postecoglou simply asked his Spurs players for more of the same in the second half.

“The gaffer’s team talk was just keep doing the same because the last five or 10 minutes they started to tire,” Maddison said. “It’s a common theme in our games, we score a lot of goals in the second half and late.

“They played a lot of balls in behind but I felt like we were in control and they were getting tired towards the end of the first half. The manager’s message was just to keep doing the same thing because they won’t be able to keep up.”

This may come as a surprise to Tottenham fans as Spurs weren’t exactly threatening during the opening 45 minutes.

But Postecoglou clearly noticed that his side was starting to wear Villa down as they dominated the ball in the first half.

It was a huge win for Tottenham as it saw them close the gap on Unai Emery’s side.

With 11 games left to play for Spurs, their fate is now in their hands as they sit two points behind Villa with a game in hand.

Should Postecoglou deliver a top-four finish in his debut campaign, it would be some achievement from the Aussie when you consider the mess he walked into last summer.
