James Maddison has shared his theory over why Tottenham Hotspur score late goals so often.

Spurs have made a habit of leaving it late this season. Ange Postecoglou’s men have netted a total of five goals in the 90th minute and beyond.

The late goals have earned them nine points in total, with last-minute wins over Sheffield United, Liverpool and most recently Brighton.

While it didn’t take Tottenham until stoppage time to break down a resilient Crystal Palace side on Saturday, their three goals came between the 77th and 88th minute.

James Maddison played a key role in their second as he set up Cristian Romero to hand Spurs a deserved lead.

The midfielder spoke after his side’s 3-1 win over Palace and claimed it’s ‘no coincidence’ Spurs keep scoring late goals.

Maddison has theory over Tottenham’s late goals

Speaking to Tottenham’s stadium announcer, Paul Coyte, Maddison explained why he believes Spurs have consistently scored late goals this season.

“It’s very difficult to break down five at the back with four midfielders,” Maddison said, as seen on WeAreTottenhamTV. “But it’s also very tough to do that for 100 minutes.

“That’s why we score a lot of late goals. It’s not a coincidence. It’s because we make the same runs and patterns all games and you can’t track them at the end. It’s no coincidence we score a lot of late goals.”

Picking up late wins is certainly a decent habit and one of many positive changes we’ve seen under Postecoglou’s guidance.

But Tottenham will undoubtedly be aiming to make things more comfortable as they continue to adjust to the Aussie’s demands.

Spurs could have had a couple of goals on Saturday before Eberechi Eze gave Palace the lead against the run of play.

That will surely come with time and for the time being, Postecoglou will be content with his side picking up three points as they continue to push for a top-four finish.
