James Maddison could hold out for Tottenham move - journalist

Journalist Ben Jacobs has told Give Me Sport that James Maddison could hold out for a future move to Tottenham Hotspur rather than take up the chance to join Newcastle United this summer.

Maddison will certainly be one player to keep an eye on in the final days of the transfer window. He is already off the mark this season, with two goals and one assist.

Unfortunately, Leicester are still awaiting their first win. And after a really difficult summer for the Foxes, he will surely had some doubts about whether he should stay put.

His most likely exit route in this window surely takes him to Newcastle. Reports have suggested that the Magpies have made a £40 million bid for the attacking midfielder. Leicester meanwhile, want £60 million.

‘That may make him wait’

But they are not his only admirers. Reports have claimed that Spurs also want Maddison. And with that, Jacobs believes that Maddison could stay put this summer in the hope of Antonio Conte’s men coming in further down the line.

“I think that Maddison sees himself in the next year or two, playing regular European football,” he told Give Me Sport.

“That might be Newcastle, so there’s an element of persuasion there of joining the project from the ground up and help us get there.

“But there’s a sort of vague admiration from Spurs.

“They’ve not done anything with it, but I think it’s that type of club, if they come in for Maddison in a future window that may make him wait.”

Maddison could hold out for future Tottenham move

You can understand Maddison’s stance. The ‘outstanding‘ England international is 25 now. And he may be wary of making the wrong move ahead of what should be the peak of his career.

As Jacobs suggests, Newcastle are making real progress. And they will surely be playing in Europe at some stage. But Maddison will want to be there in the near future.

The longer Antonio Conte spends at Spurs meanwhile, the more likely it is that they will elevate themselves into serious contention for major honours.

If Maddison feels that Tottenham are likely to make a move to sign him at some stage, he may be cautious about moving elsewhere too hastily.
