James Justin is versatile, athletic and talented and would bolster Leeds’ backline

Marcelo Bielsa’s inventive thinking and tactical reshuffles have eased the pressure on the Leeds United backline.

But the fact remains that the defensive options on offer at Elland Road are slightly thin on the ground.

The suspension of Luke Ayling and outspoken comments of Pontus Jansson, which risk FA censure, throw that into sharp perspective.

With the January transfer window on the horizon and the concerns about Leeds lasting the pace well-worn, thoughts are beginning to turn to the possibility of winter business.

Leeds have reportedly had an interest in Luton’s James Justin since last January and rumours have swirled that Marcelo Bielsa was scouting the defender against Sunderland recently.

The Englishman can play full-back on either side and attacks the role with athleticism and the ability to bomb on and help the attack.

That’s exactly what Bielsa needs from his defenders and versatility is key; given his penchant for changing formations and Leeds’ lack of defensive options.

The youngster has plenty of time to grow and improve, and has adapted to life in League 1 with ease. He ticks a lot of boxes for Bielsa, and coming from lower down the leagues, he might be happier to bide his time and play second fiddle at times as well.
