Newcastle yesterday confirmed their fifth signing of the summer.

Jamal Lewis has officially joined the club from relegated Norwich City on a five-year deal, with BBC Sport reporting the fee could reach £20 million with add-ons.

Northern Ireland international Lewis has followed in the footsteps of Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser, with the former Bournemouth pair being announced on Monday, and free agents Jeff Hendrick and Mark Gillespie.

Wilson is probably the man getting Newcastle fans talking the most.

The England international is seen as someone who can provide the much-needed goals for Newcastle, with Joelinton having struggled in his first season.

Newcastle’s goalscoring issues have been well-documented since their return to the Premier League in 2017, but left-back has also been a major problem for several years now.

That is why the signing of Lewis might just turn out to be the Magpies’ best business this window.

TBR’s View – Newcastle finally have a top left-back

It can be argued that Newcastle have not really had a top left-back since the days of Jose Enrique – who left the club in 2011 to join Liverpool.

Many have come and gone at Newcastle, such as Davide Santon, Massadio Haidara, Kenedy, Antonio Barreca, Danny Rose and Jetro Willems, while some options, like Matt Ritchie, Paul Dummett and Achraf Lazaar still remain.

Willems might have been ‘the one’, but injury curtailed his season and hopes of a permanent move.

In Lewis, Newcastle have a wonderful player who is effective in both attack and defence.

Aged just 22, the star has several years before he reaches his prime, by which point he is likely to become one of the league’s best left-sided defenders.
