Report: What Jamal Lascelles did on the touchline that left Chelsea players fuming against Newcastle
Newcastle continued to underline their credentials as genuine top four challengers yesterday as they saw off Chelsea at St James’ Park.
Another well-taken goal, this time from Joe Willock, ensured the Toon went into the World Cup break in a remarkably impressive third position. For Eddie Howe, it’s a position he’d not even have dreamt about being in at this stage of the season.
Of course, Newcastle doing so well is all about the entire squad. And according to The Telegraph, the entire squad – even those not playing – made sure they beat Chelsea yesterday.
The Telegraph reports how Lascelles, who wasn’t even on the pitch, played his part as Marc Cucurella attempted to make one last throw into the box for the Blues. Instead of simply watching his team defend it, Lascelles put himself right in the way of Cucurella. Queue angry Chelsea players, a chance gone, and the full-time whistle.
For Lascelles, it was a small moment in which he could play his part in the team winning. The defender has had to make do with a more squad based role this season. But in this moment, he showed very much he is on board with it all being about the club doing well.
Chelsea, meanwhile, continue to stutter under Graham Potter’s leadership.
TBR’s View: Newcastle and Lascelles shocking everyone
You can’t help but sit back and admire this Newcastle team. Sure, they’ve spent a bit of money but boy have they spent it wisely.
Players like Guimaraes, Botman, and Almiron might be taking the headlines. But role players like Lascelles are just as important for Eddie Howe. It’s something he has stressed before.
Lascelles’ little cameo here not only showed his commitment to the Newcastle cause. It also showed he’s willing to get under the skin of the opposition, and he wound Chelsea up to perfection here.
