Leeds United take on Bolton Wanderers in the League Cup this evening, hoping to continue their excellent start to the season. The Whites have come out flying in the Championship. In their last game, they defeated Derby County 4-1 at Pride Park. The result, coupled with their opening day win against Stoke City, has seen them installed as favourites to win the league.
There was, however, one slight blip from the Derby game. The home side’s goal came from a speculative free-kick effort from Welsh international Tom Lawrence. His effort should have been a comfortable save for Leeds goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell. Unfortunately, he lost the track of the ball and flapped at air.
It was a mistake, but one Leeds fans will forgive of a top young talent who has stepped up to number one status with aplomb.
However, it might have happened at the worst possible time for the youngster.
Marcelo Bielsa confirmed in his press conference yesterday that Peacock-Farrell will not play tonight. Instead, Chelsea loanee Jamal Blackman will be between the sticks.
The 24-year-old, who had an excellent season on loan at Sheffield United in 2017-18, is set to start the game.
Coming off the back of Peacock-Farrell’s mistake v Derby, it is the perfect chance for the loanee to stake his claim for the starting position.
A positive display could see Peacock-Farrell in trouble. Blackman will need to make sure he takes it.
