Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles has described Magpies midfielder Lewis Miley as a “great lad” with a “bright future” in the game.

The Newcastle skipper was speaking to the club’s media team on YouTube ahead of the Magpies’ Premier League meeting with Tottenham on Sunday.

Miley has risen to prominence this season, breaking into the Magpies first-team and slotting seamlessly into top-level football.

He doesn’t turn 18 until next May, but he has already clocked up eight competitive appearances for Newcastle, including two in the Champions League.

Miley was one of the better players for the Magpies in their loss to Everton, looking tidy in possession, making good passes and being defensively sound.

Lascelles, in conversation with the Newcastle media team, spoke highly of the Magpies academy graduate.

“He’s been thrown in the deep end, he’s under the spotlights, he probably played three of the biggest games that we’ve played in ourselves,” said the Newcastle defender.

“Now for me it started in pre-season when we went to America, he was probably our best player in pre-season.

“Good on the ball, good athlete, he’s a good height and he’s a great lad as well. He wants to learn, he wants to listen.

“So yeah, he’s got a bright future, and I think he’s dealing with these games and the spotlight really well. He’s got good people around him to support him.”

Lewis Miley is a once-in-a-generation talent for Newcastle United

The Magpies have struck gold with Miley. He is a once-in-a-generation talent who looks set to have a bright future in the game.

The vast majority of 17-year-olds in football tend to play for the Under-18s, and only a select few will be deemed good enough to play for the Under-21s.

The fact Miley is not only starting for Newcastle, but delivering displays worthy of an established Premier League player, shows how incredible he is.

There’s a good chance the youngster will start again for the Magpies against Spurs, and it’ll be exciting to see how he fares against the depleted North Londoners.
