Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles may need to think about his future at the club, after missing out on Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad.
Lascelles has represented his country at all youth levels, but is yet to be handed a chance with the seniors.
He has emerged as one of Newcastle’s most important players since the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016, and many Magpies supporters have been very vocal about his lack of opportunities with England.
Admittedly, Lascelles’ form this season hasn’t been stellar, but he hasn’t been poor like a lot of his teammates.
He has developed nicely in the past couple of seasons especially, and may feel hard done by to miss out – with Southgate showing he’s not afraid to make big calls.
Why is Lascelles being snubbed?
The defender, certainly last season, has the potential to be one of the Premier League’s top defenders.
He is strong, quick and reads the game very well.
But for some reason he is yet to be given the chance at international level.
It could be that Newcastle’s league position obscures the manager’s thinking when it comes to selecting players.
The Magpies are down at the wrong end, but they’ve actually been a bit unlucky with some refereeing decisions and in another season might be higher up the table.
Lascelles is having to do plenty of defending and is in the thick of the action.
Does he need to leave?
Lascelles is a great Premier League defender in a struggling team.
Perhaps there is even some subconscious bias from Middlesbrough legend Southgate.
That’s unlikely, but it’s hard to understand why someone who is so open to giving players a chance hasn’t yet handed one to Lascelles.
Maybe a change of environment is what’s required, and then that elusive debut will come.
