There is certainly some debate over who got the final touch on Liverpool’s winning goal this weekend. Divock Origi deserves the credit. He was the main protagonist from the Reds in scoring the third and crucial goal in a 3-2 victory.
However, many agree that it was, in fact, Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles who got the final touch.
Which certainly has a twisted sense of irony about it. Because, if you cast your mind back to last summer, Lascelles was seemingly on Jurgen Klopp’s transfer hitlist.
As reported by The Independent last May, Liverpool were said to be considering both Lascelles and Burnley defender James Tarkowski to strengthen their centre-back position for this season.
The Sun (27/05/2018) reported that he was being valued at £30 million by the Magpies. However, no deal ever happened. Lascelles is happy at Newcastle and after spending big on Fabinho and Alisson, Liverpool were probably spent.
Lascelles however appears to have still had a big impact on Liverpool’s title chances, even if he is not wearing red.
With doubts over the form of Dejan Lovren this term, Liverpool might want to consider another hunt for a new centre-back.
If they go for Lascelles again, he’d arrive with a heroes welcome.
