‘Jakupovic to the rescue’ – Three things learnt from Southampton 0-0 Hull City

Maguire stands tall in rear-guard performance

Jakupovic aside, one of Hull City’s stand-out performers on Saturday – and stand-out performers all season – has been centre-back Harry Maguire, who kept the hosts at bay with a strong display.

After conceding 41 goals in just 17 away matches prior to kick-off, Maguire finally provided the defensive discipline that the Tigers have been crying out for on the road all season, making five interceptions, three tackles, two clearances on top of winning three aerial duels against the Saints.

His leadership at the back cannot be understated in this Hull City side, and if they do manage to avoid the drop into the Championship then Maguire can be singled out for his exceptional season.

He managed to keep the impact of the lively Sofiane Boufal and Dusan Tadic to a minimum and barely gave Manolo Gabbiadini a sniff in front of goal – so much so that Jakupovic only needed to make two saves.

The downside for Marco Silva is that, if Hull do stay up, it’s almost inevitable that interest will begin to gather over the summer for the 24-year-old; interest that would be richly merited after a superb season.
