Jacob Murphy was handed a start by Steve Bruce for Newcastle United last night.
The winger is back on the scene at St. James’ Park after spending last term out on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where he made 44 appearances, scoring nine goals and making six assists.
There has been some talk about the player’s future earlier in the window.
Murphy has been linked with a move to Scottish giants Rangers, with Herald and Times Sport reporting Murphy was actually keen to go to Ibrox on loan.
But Murphy sparkled against Morecambe in the EFL Cup last night, and Bruce has now reportedly (Daily Record) ruled out another temporary move for the 25-year-old.
It could all mean that the writing is now on the wall for Murphy’s Newcastle teammate Christian Atsu, who arguably hasn’t done enough to warrant staying.
TBR’s View – Murphy stance could see Atsu exit accelerated
With Murphy’s turnaround seemingly complete, it’s difficult to see how Atsu can remain at the club.
The £30,000-a-week Ghanaian winger (Spotrac) didn’t score a single goal in 2019/20 and made five assists.
That kind of return has seen his future be speculated over this summer, and rightly so.
His potential exit from the club may now be accelerated, with Bruce seemingly ready to take a chance on Murphy.
