Jackson Irvine comments on Tom Rogic’s Celtic future

Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic has had his future at the club thrown into question by pundits in recent months, after falling behind the likes of Olivier Ntcham and Ryan Christie in the pecking order at Parkhead.

The Australian is yet to feature for Celtic this season and there is some belief he might be considering his future at the club.

However, one former Celtic player and an international team-mate of Rogic’s thinks that is unlikely.

Jackson Irvine, who spent five years at Celtic, is a current Australian international team-mate of Rogic’s and has been speaking to the press in Australia about the Celtic midfielder.

“Whatever Tom does, for sure he’ll be closely considering everything, every factor,” Irvine told SBS’s The World Game. “I haven’t spoken to him lately and I don’t know so much about his situation.

“People will say things about what he should and shouldn’t do.

“But Tom’s an amazing player and a top professional and I’m sure whatever decision he makes will be very measured.

“Celtic are going for 10 (Scottish Premier League titles) in a row and people outside Scotland probably don’t understand what that means. But people who’ve played in Scotland and the fans there know what’s at stake.

“Who knows when something like that will happen again? Tom’s been a big part of things there (in recent years). If he stays – amazing. Whatever else happens I’m sure he’ll have considered all the options before he makes that call. He’ll do what’s best for himself, I’m sure.”

Rogic has undoubtedly been a fantastic servant for Celtic since joining the club in 2012. However, injuries have disrupted him in recent times and last season was his lowest appearance tally for the Bhoys since missing the entire 2014-15 campaign with a groin problem.

So perhaps the time is right for Celtic to start considering moving the player on.

However, Rogic has not expressed any disappointment in his status at Celtic and is under contract until the summer of 2023, so there does not appear to be any pressing concern regarding his future.

As Irvine rightly points out, the chance to play in Celtic’s 10 in a row campaign will be a major draw for the player.

But beyond that, Celtic might be struggling to convince Rogic to stick around as a bit-part player.
