Jack Wilshere appears to have labelled Mesut Ozil Arsenal’s best player as he responded to Gary Lineker’s tweet on the midfielder’s omission from the Gunners’ Premier League squad.
Ozil has been on the periphery of Mikel Arteta’s plans for some time. He has not played for the Gunners since March.
And it now looks highly unlikely that he will play for the club again. He had already been left out of Arsenal’s squad for the Europa League. And it was confirmed on the Premier League’s website this week that he has not been named on the Gunners’ list for that competition either.
The omission prompted Ozil to take to social media to issue a statement.
In that, the former Germany international expressed his disappointment at being left out having been optimistic about the direction everything was moving in under Arteta.
‘The best player’
Ozil is something of a divisive figure for football fans. And that is largely down arguably to the wages that the 31-year-old earns. As noted by the Guardian, he is on £350,000-a-week at the Emirates.
Lineker however, insisted that he had some sympathy for Ozil. And he was not the only person to show support for the midfielder.
Here is what Lineker posted…
Every footballer wants to play. Not being able to, regardless of salary, is soul destroying. https://t.co/I4ri1nUfpY

And in response to Lineker’s tweet, Wilshere seemed to suggest that Arteta had frozen out Arsenal’s best player…
Spot on Gary, especially when you are the best player! https://t.co/3ZBTcEcHLa
