Jack Wilshere reacts to Harry Kane display in England win over Iran
Jack Wilshere has told The Sun that Harry Kane had a good game for England in their win over Iran, suggesting that the Tottenham Hotspur talisman was vitally important to the performance in their World Cup opener.
The Three Lions are off and running in Qatar. And they did it in some style, winning 6-2 to put one foot in the knockout stages already.
Remarkably, none of the six goals were scored by Kane. Of course, the Tottenham star is looking to become the first player to win Golden Boots at different World Cups.
Wilshere praises Harry Kane
But that does not mean that the 29-year-old was not superb against Iran. He set up two of the goals. And he was incredibly keen to get involved in the build-up play.
Wilshere, understandably, thinks that England cannot afford to get carried away just yet. But he did praise Kane’s performance in the curtain-raiser.
“Harry Kane didn’t score but he was vitally important too, the way he held the ball up and came up with a couple of assists,” he told The Sun.
“He had a good game, as usual, and the quick men around him were able to benefit from his experience.”
The opening few days of the tournament will only increase England fans’ optimism about their prospects of winning the trophy. So far, none of the other heavyweights who have played have looked that impressive.
Argentina were beaten by Saudi Arabia. The Netherlands toiled for a long time against Senegal, who themselves were poor. And Denmark were unable to score against Tunisia.
Obviously, there are plenty of sides still to play. But injuries make the France squad a lot less daunting to come up against. And the likes of Spain, Germany, Brazil and Portugal all boast a lot of younger players who lack World Cup experience.
England do not have a perfect squad. The defensive options will probably remain a concern to many.
But the amount of depth they have in attack is frightening – as proven by the fact that they did score six, and none came from Kane.
