Was Jack Wilshere the problem at West Ham, rather than the solution?

West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere appears to have been more of a hindrance than a help following his summer move from Arsenal.

The star is currently out injured after undergoing surgery on his ankle, and will miss around six weeks according to The Sun.

Wilshere had started each of the club’s opening four games before his operation.

That caused him to miss the 3-1 victory over Everton at Goodison Park, which was the team’s best performance of the season so far.

That was then followed up by an impressive display against Chelsea at the London Stadium.

In the last two weeks, West Ham have gained four points.

They’ve lifted themselves off the bottom of the Premier League table, which is interesting considering Wilshere played no part.

Has Wilshere been the problem all along?

Manuel Pellegrini has opted to go with a three-man midfield consisting of Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang and Mark Noble for the past two games.

In both games the trio have worked well together.

Rice is the man that anchors the defence, while Noble and Obiang work as the industrious central midfielders.

West Ham appear to have a better balance with those three, and clearly it has yielded positive results.

Wilshere’s record currently stands at played four, lost four. Unfortunately, he didn’t shine in any of those outings.

It could be that he was simply operating too deep to play to his main strengths.

He’s going to miss a number of games now, and it’s a big chance for the current three to really nail down their starting spots.
