If there’s one thing managers won’t stand for in football it’s lateness.

If a manager wants to set high standards at any club, they need to clamp down on any timekeeping issues, and that’s something Mikel Arteta knows all about at Arsenal.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had lateness issues, and he was ultimately released by Arsenal.

Nowadays, standards in Arsenal training are incredibly high. Martin Odegaard is always the first through the door, while Jurrien Timber also stays to do extra late on.

However, it wasn’t always this way at Arsenal, and speaking to Sport Bible, Jack Wilshere has now revealed that one Arsenal striker was, notably, always late for training.

Yaya Sanogo was always late to Arsenal training

Wilshere was asked to name the player he played with who was most often late to training.

Wilshere didn’t hesitate when he shared his answer, naming Yaya Sanogo as the player who was most often late to training at Arsenal.

You’d be forgiven for not knowing all that much about Sanogo as he had a minimal impact at Arsenal, but, at one point, the striker was very highly rated.

However, Sanogo never reached his potential, and Wilshere’s comments here do help to explain why.

Sanogo never really got going at Arsenal, but if you’re often turning up late to training, you’re never going to get on the right track.

As the old saying goes, failure to prepare is preparing to fail, and Sanogo simply wasn’t ready to thrive at a top-level club like Arsenal.

The Frenchman’s stats for the Gunners tell the whole story here.

One goal in 20 matches is a terrible return, and now, at the age of just 32, Sanogo is playing in China.

Arsene Wenger worked wonders with a number of young French prospects during his time at Arsenal, but, unfortunately, he could never quite get things to click for Sanogo at the Emirates.

There’s a reason Mikel Arteta is so keen for his players to be punctual, and that’s because standards need to be high if you want to challenge for major honours.
