Jack Wilshere believes Gabriel Martinelli will 'thrive' with Arsenal fans back
Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere admits he is excited to see how Gabriel Martinelli does when Gunners fans return to stadiums next season.
Martinelli spent much of last term on the periphery but is expected to make a bigger impact this season. The Brazilian is highly regarded by Mikel Arteta and the Gunners, and is a player fans are keen to see more of.
It’s expected that Martinelli will get more game-time. He was injured for much of last season, but enjoyed an injury-free spell between March and the end of the season.
And Wilshere believes that the Brazilian can be a key player for Arsenal, especially with supporters due back.
“I feel he will only get better with experience of playing in the big games. I do think he is a player who will thrive off having the fans back,” Wilshere told Highbury Squad, via the Daily Mail.
“I remember the game at Chelsea when he scored that goal. He just got better and better as the game went on and the fans got behind him.”
While Wilshere is excited to see more of Martinelli, he also expressed his surprise at how little Arsenal have used him thus far.
“I was surprised at times when Arsenal needed a goal, they needed something and he wasn’t thrown on. He is that type of player who can do that. He arrives in the box,” Wilshere added.
Martinelli finished the season with just the two PL goals to his name. But he’ll be expecting and hoping for more in the coming season.
The Gunners are currently working on overhauling their squad. Albert Lokonga and Nuno Taveres have arrived. Ben White is also expected to sign.
In attack, the likes of Lacazette and Nketiah face uncertain futures. Martinelli, then can look forward to more minutes in the coming 12 months.
