Phil Foden made his first start for Manchester City since Euro 2020 as Pep Guardiola’s men cruised past Wycombe – and Jack Grealish has responded.
Foden, 20, has been sidelined with a foot injury for some time – missing City’s opening matches. But he came on as a sub against Leipzig.
He did on the weekend during the 0-0 draw with Southampton, too. On Tuesday, he got a start against League One outfit Wycombe at the Etihad.
Wycombe took the lead, but City cruised to a huge 6-1 win. Kevin De Bruyne equalised – after being played in by Foden on the left flank.
Riyad Mahrez made it 2-1, before Foden lashed a shot that moved all over the place – before ending up in the net, from all of 25 yards.
Ferran Torres tapped home for four, Mahrez scuffed in a fifth and talent Cole Palmer made it six. Foden posted on Instagram after the win.
Foden shines: Grealish praises Manchester City star on Instagram
It is expected to be another season of growth and development for Foden, who has already surpassed expectation at just the age of 20.
One of Europe’s best young players, England star Foden is likely to be crucial in anything good City do this season. His return is key.
But with Grealish in the side, where does Foden play and does it hamper his game time? Or could another miss out, in the form of Raheem Sterling?
Probably the latter. Either way, Grealish was full of praise for Foden, commenting a six-word verdict on the Manchester City man’s post.
Adebayo Akinfenwa also commented, after his Wycombe were knocked out.
