Jack Grealish has simply insisted that the Premier League need to get rid of VAR as the Aston Villa star took to his Instagram story following their defeat on Monday night.
Dean Smith’s men suffered their fourth loss in five games as West Ham won 2-1 at the London Stadium. However, it was another game that involved a lot of controversy.
Villa were denied a late goal after Ollie Watkins was deemed to be offside. Watkins’s arm was in an offside position – which in itself, seems a ridiculous justification.
But there was certainly an argument that Watkins was only in front of Angelo Ogbonna because he was trying to shrug off the defender’s challenge.
By the letter of the law, Watkins may have been offside. But Villa can feel incredibly hard done by not to get either a free-kick or another penalty – depending on when the contact began.
And it would be no surprise if many Villa fans completely agreed with Grealish’s brief assessment of VAR on Instagram following the game…
It seems to be getting to the stage where every team is growing tired of how the VAR is working. It has done little to eliminate controversy. If anything, it has only made games more frustrating to watch.
Something will surely have to change further down the line. Technology will one day be used to ensure that the right decisions are made consistently. However, you can understand why many believe that the way it is currently being used is simply farcical.
