Aston Villa are set to welcome the long-awaited return of club captain Jack Grealish this week after missing almost three months of football due to a shin injury.

Birmingham Live report that Dean Smith has confirmed that the England international will return to the Villa matchday squad this week in either Thursday’s game against Everton or for Sunday’s clash versus Crystal Palace, with the Birmingham-based club looking likely to finish in a midtable spot in the Premier League this year with four matches left to play.

Grealish has been missing from first-team action since late February when the Villa captain sustained a shin injury that has kept the winger off the pitch for 12 league games, with Smith’s side winning just three of these fixtures, losing six, including Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Manchester United at home.

There was worry amongst Villa and England supporters that Grealish could miss this summer’s EUROs due to this injury, but with the 24-year-old back in training this week and UEFA expanding international squad sizes from 23 to 26, it appears the Villa star is safe from missing out on Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions selections.

TBR View: Grealish has returned on time for breakout European summer

Grealish has gone from strength to strength with Villa since their return to the Premier League in 2019, and this summer could see the 24-year-old attacker explode onto the scene in style with England at EURO 2020.

The Villa captain has long been lauded as one of England’s most exciting players in this generation, and this summer, Grealish will be fully fit to prove to Europe what he is capable of with a squad that many will be expecting to go the distance in the continental tournament, with Southgate likely to call up an extremely exciting squad with 26 players now available for selection.
