Jack Grealish disagrees with Gabby Agbonlahor over Arsenal claim

Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has strongly refuted Gabby Agbonlahor’s claims about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s part in last night’s winning goal for Arsenal.

The ex-Villa ace doesn’t believe the Arsenal star can claim an assist for last night’s winning goal, as it was only a five-yard pass – and the only one he could make at that moment.

Aubameyang squared for Emile Smith Rowe to tap into an empty net last night after Kepa had kept out a loose backpass by Chelsea midfielder Jorginho.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Agbonlahor and Jamie O’Hara were discussing what constitutes an assist, with the former Premier League striker defiant over Aubameyang’s input.

Celtic strike Premier Sports deal - is this the "additional value" we've been waiting for?

He told TalkSPORT: “You’re in the box and it comes off your knee you end up with an assist because you touched it last.

“It’s absolute nonsense. If you make a worldie pass that’s an assist, if you go by two or three players and put it on a plate, that’s an assist.

“If you make a five-yard pass, you can’t call that an assist. I’m not having it, not one bit.

“Last night we saw Aubameyang, that’s not an assist for me. I’m not counting that because it’s the only pass he could have played.”

Following on from his comments, Grealish took offence to his suggestion too, defending the Arsenal star.

The 25-year-old is currently nursing an injury but is set to return to action. He went back to Agbonlahor on Twitter, saying:

TBR View: Absurd Agbonlahor take doesn’t make sense

Aubameyang’s pass might have been simply but ultimately he was on hand to be able to set up Smith Rowe with relative ease.

His pass was no fluke and in drawing the goalkeeper out, he made life easy for his teammate.

Agbonlahor has been known to come out with some interesting stuff but this might be his most astonishing take yet.

Grealish is a man who knows all about providing chances for his teammates and it’s little surprise that he’s stuck up for the Arsenal man.

The England international has scored seven goals and has registered 12 assists this season. If Agbonlahor had his way, the Villa man might just be robbed of a few of those!
