Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish has congratulated Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips for signing a new contract at Elland Road.
The Whites confirmed Monday on their official website that Phillips has penned a new long-term deal that keeps him at the club until 2024.
Leeds confirmed that they turned down “multiple offers in excess of £20million” and the Yorkshire Evening Post reports Villa saw their attempts to sign him rejected.
Phillips has developed into a quality defensive midfielder since breaking through the academy and is now an ever-present in Marcelo Bielsa’s team.
The 23-year-old is a deep-lying playmaker with an excellent range of passing and he helps dictate possession, but also loves to put his foot in with tough tackles.
Phillips expressed his delight on Instagram after committing his future to his boyhood club and Villa’s Grealish offered a response.
Phillips stayed with Leeds during the summer rather than join Villa, who are now enjoying Premier League football under Dean Smith.
The midfielder certainly looks ready to grace top-flight football and it will be his aim to get the Yorkshire giants promoted this season.
He has all the attributes to play in the Premier League with his extreme composure on the ball and some fans even feel that he shouldn’t be too far away from an England call-up at some point in the future.
Grealish had some eye-catching battles against Phillips last season in the Championship, with the latter proving his class against him.
